UKMOC
M.A.D.
WEEKEND
17TH-18TH JUNE 2006
************************

Here it is folks, the event you’ve all been waiting for!

Rides out, bike show, bands - Crimes of Passion and All Except, raffle, and plenty of beer!

Even free camping!

People have been saying that they want something big up North, well this is it!

The idea for this event has been in the pipeline for quite a while and has transformed from the idea of a basic meet and ride out into a full weekend with a difference.

The UKMOC M.A.D. Weekend will be held at Squire’s Café (http://www.squires-cafe.co.uk/)<--(link) about 15 miles east of Leeds, a great rural venue and easy to get to from just about anywhere. The nearest village is Sherburn in Elmet which has some B+B accommodation if needed.
There's a link to a list of accommodation here (http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/monster/showthread.php?t=15935&page=4).

The weekend will start with a rideout on Saturday afternoon followed by food, beer, and a couple of up and coming bands called Crimes of Passion and All Except will be playing for us on Saturday night! On Sunday we’ll have a small bike show with prizes and another short rideout. We’ll also be having a raffle – the prizes will depend on my blagging skills. :chuckle:

This event will be something a bit special, not just because it’s a 2 day-er but mainly because we want to make this a fund raising event for a children’s hospice in Wetherby. This is where M.A.D. comes into it. M.A.D stands for Make A Difference and is a concept which dazzi-b and myself have come up with in order to raise money.
The hospice – Martin House (www.martinhouse.org.uk/Care/About%20Us/about.htm) - is almost totally reliant on donations and they provide their much needed care and support for free.
^^^^^^--- There's a link to their website here - if you’d like to see what they do for yourselves.
We feel that this is a very worthy cause and anything we can raise would be very much appreciated by them.

As far as I know, this will be the first club event dedicated to raising money for charity. If we can make a success of this weekend then it could be the start of an annual event!

I don’t like asking for money but you can’t raise owt without asking can you?
We’d like to ask you for a donation of £10 if you’re coming for the weekend or £5 if you come for one of the days.

Everything raised will go to Martin House. Their Community Fundraiser, Alison Wragg will be coming to Squires at 10am on Sunday so we can present the cheque to her. Any money which is donated after that will be banked and a cheque will be sent directly to Martin House. We'll tot up the grand total after the weekend and final amount raised will be posted on this thread.

Saturday

12.00pm - Arrive
3pm - 6pm - Ride out, including stop for food and refreshments
6pm - 8pm - Chill, chat, beer etc
8pm - Band 1
9pm - Super duper raffle
10pm - Band 2

Sunday

9am - Judging for the bike show
10am - Cheque presentation
11am - Short ride out for lunch, then back to Squires for prize giving

It's NOT essential that you turn up on a Monster, so please don't think you can't join in if don't have one...... Hell, you can even come in a car if you want to bring a non-biking partner or your bike's off the road or whatever :)

Please make cheques payable to "Make a Difference" and pm either myself or dazzi-b for the address to send it to :D

If anyone has any questions or can help out in any way then please feel free to pm me or dazzi-b.

Thanks for taking the time to read our rather long post.....Now get your names down! :D

There is a distinct possibility I may be able to attend.

I am sooo not camping! I shall be on line looking for bed and breakfast.

Never been that far north before (in this country anyway)

Will confirm my movements shortly.

Over.

Hiya Nonnie,

Check this place out, it's less than 5mins away from Squires on the bike:D or about 15/20 by foot (it's a bit dark and lonely though on foot)

Camping....... Oooow must of missed that bit. I dont do camping tents are so not practical for me. Nowhere to plug my hair dryer in for a start. So if I do the weekend it'll be b&b for me to.

Just a quick note.........

If you do a search for B&B/pubs/hotels around the Sherburn-in-Elmet, South Millford or Garforth areas it should throw up a few results.

The White Swan in South Millford is a decent place and there's a couple of good B&Bs in Sherburn-in-Elmet.

And before anybody comes up with it.................NO YOU CAN'T!!!!! (I know my place will be empty):D :D :D

I'd rather not know about your movements thanks Nonnie, it's bad enough that I know every detail of my childrens toilet habits without knowing about those of my friends!

You can put your name down anyway Nonnie, we just want to know how many are interested so we can get some idea of numbers. :)

I am also not the outdoors type, however after a few martinis I would rather collapse onto an air bed than negotiate what passes for a hotel or b&b in this country, and it is just the one night. So I will be a name, I have never been to Leeds, it sounds like an horrendous place but I do like it when expectations go a bit wonky doo dar.

so yeah, I'll do it for the mad kids.

Sadly i am a wimp and shall not be there but what a great idea for a weekend and a charity money raiser. I shall be giving Nonnie some funding to take along to add to the total. Please can i ask you all to make sure it gets put to the correct use and not turned into liquid stimulent.

PD

oh and before you say it, despite anyones idea of the correct use being liquid stimulent i mean correct as in given to the MAD fund.

There's nothing to say we can't have another weekend do sometime over the summer - you'll have to send me a list of your holiday dates! :chuckle:

While I'm here I'd just like to say thanks to everyone, we weren't sure what the response to this was going to be like and both dazzi and myself have been really surprised at how many names are on the list already. It's great to see so much support so early on. Even if some of you can't come, it's encouraging to know that you would if you could! :mand:

I've once stopped for coffee in the watermill. I think it's the one on what used to be the A1, if it is you can expect Alan Partridge to walk into the bar.
There's a nice place near Sherburn, but I can't recall it's name. As a B&B i's probably a lot cheaper than the mill.

And Lex, Leeds is too far sarf for me, but they have a decent harvey nicks. as for the room, I think we should check with Squires. Free camping is a bonus, a room with a view is always better.

Dazzi, you live there. How about a list of places in the village?

Singletrack.......

If you want to use the BM then that's fine :)

The same goes for everyone, even turn up in the car if you like (offsite car park during the day, onsite parking once visiting bikes have left)

This is primarily a charity/social event so people can turn up on/in what ever they like :mand:

Colton and Whitkirk are both about 6 miles away - a bit too far out really.

dazzi-b is going to post a list of nearby accommodation in the next couple of days.

To save trawling through the whole thread, I'll post any additional important details on my first post then it's all in one place.

We didn't prepare enough for Heacham which was why the whole thing was such a shock, but as we've already been to the dogs, we have a vast background knowledge of greyhounds which are very similar to whippets, now we just need a cloth cap each, you need to take up smoking and we need to crack the language, so the Friday night before, we'll go down the pub and practise ok?

And yes please Nonnie - I'll hopefully get to you Friday night and we can practice in the pub and then take it easy on the ride up there for beer and band and HOTEL as opposed to tent!!!!! (See - I've obviously turned into a Southern softie over the years!!!!!) ;)

keep it behind closed tent flaps and you'll be fine :mand:

I am tentless so I shall be trying to find a home for my sleeping bag so keep your fingers crossed that someone else offers me a place to lay my head - ha ha ha

Hi everyone.

A quick update to say that we've now got an account set up for donations :D

Cheques can be made payable to "Make a difference" and if you pm either myself or dazzi-b we'll let you know the address to send them to. We will be collecting money over the MAD weekend but we'd prefer to bank as much as possible beforehand. Dazzi has arranged for us to have one of those large cheques to present to Martin House so we'll need to know how much to have it made up for!

There's no great rush, sometime before the end of May will be fine.

Would have liked to do this one, but it clashes with the MAG Farmyard Rally :( . Never-mind, maybe I'll see some of you if you ride on down to the village for a brew, like last year! ;)

Hi all,

After going to the weekender, me and dazzi have decided that a quiz would be a nice idea! We'll sort some prizes and hopefully some plaques/trophy too.

Donations are starting to come in now, as are prizes for the raffle :D
Many thanks to Thick Leyther and Chaos Inc and to all those who have sent cheques or given me money :hail:
If anyone else would like to donate prizes they will be most welcome

Less than 7 weeks to go folks!!!!! :woot:

Hi everyone :D

It's only a few weeks to go now and I thought I'd give you all a little nudge in the direction of your cheque books!

We'd like to get as much money into the bank as we can in the next 3 weeks. A few people have asked for my address to send cheques to but I've only received a handful...... If you've sent a cheque and I've not pm'd to say that I've got it, can you get in touch with me please?

If you're "weather dependant" you can bring your donation on the day seeing as we'll be harrassing Squire's customers for donations anyway! :)

See you all soon :D :D :D

Where's Plum? I wonder if he'll do a countdown timer for us?

Tigerlily,

Don't know if this link is any use but I just typed in a search on google for bands in Leeds and this popped up?

http://bands.meefo.com/?bandlocs=Leeds

May be other options - would have thought there must be at least one band available in the area?

We also have some great bands doing NABD events like HOGGZ, and Steve the lead singer is actually a member of UKMOC these days...

http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/monster/member.php?u=2179

However Leeds is a lot further than they normally go for gigs, and they are already booked for the MAD weekend - maybe next year?

I'm really sorry to have to say this but the band have cancelled on us :grump:

There's naff all I can do about it and the chances of getting someone else in at such short notice are slim to non-existant - even if I was offering to pay them, which I'm not!

Any bright ideas anyone???????

I believe there is an up and coming beat combo from Leeds called the 'Kaiser Chiefs' - might be worth trying them.:mand:

Sorry to hear that Tigerlily at such short notice but, hey, look, either get a bloke in with a disco or blag a karaoke machine and we'll make our own entertainment. Don't worry too much my love, once I'm drunk, I'll sing, dance, whatever, I don't mind. I'm not proud and I rarely get tired.....

Benson....You'll be gutted to hear that the second band is taking the place of the quiz! I hope you can live with the disappointment :mand:

Saturday night will now consist of beer - band - super duper raffle - beer - band - beer :booze:

Any clues?

Nonnie

Oh um I thought the rideout was on Sunday and to present the cheque? I am quite undoubtedly wrong though. Still, my hotel has a swimming pool!!! hehe, can't wait. Aiming to be in the pool with a large drink for approximately 3pm.

According to the original info, main rideout saturday afternoon with a shorter one on sunday. Things may have changed since then though!

A swimming pool this far North? Watch out for the icebergs!

Yes, you're completely right!

TL is there any kind of itinerary? It's a long long way from here so an idea of what time I ought to be there would be great for us.

Oh well, I am guessing the pools open all night then. I can have a dip after the drinking!

benson
05-06-2006, 09:16 PM
He he he - I can't wait - I aim to be there hopefully mid afternoon depending on what time I manage to leave home in the morning - hurrah for indoor and therefore I hope heated pools - and then the entertainment - yes Tigerlil I will manage to live without the quiz - and I will have no choice but to drown my sorrows in decent northern beer!!! Can't wait peeps - what a blast we will have - here's to the weather staying as warm as it is right now!!!

Tigerlily
05-06-2006, 11:21 PM
What's all this about an indoor pool? (must keep up!) I'll go back and catch up in a mo - just wanted to post a link to the bands webspaces...

1 - Crimes of Passion http://www.crimesofpassion.org/
2 - All Except http://www.myspace.com/allexcept

Not even looked at them myself yet!

I'll work the itinery out properly and then post it up in the next couple of days.
Me and dazzi will be there from about 10am I think  , don't worry though, I'll confirm everything after a good chinwag wi' t'other half! :mand:

After reading about the pool at Nonnies hotel, the rideout could well be diverted to there!

We wanted to do a ride up to Martin House on Sunday, but we have since been told that it might be inappropriate for a load of noisy bikes to turn up. I can see their point as I wouldn't want to upset someone if their child had just taken a turn for the worse.

Someone will be coming down to Squire's to accept a cheque from us instead :mand:

Nonnie
06-06-2006, 08:53 AM
Actually TL I'm really glad about that. I think I would have been upset myself. It's too sad.

What we have to do guys is raise a lot of money and give those kids and their families something when they need it the very most.

benson
06-06-2006, 09:28 AM
Well I think the pool at the qualty hotel (Selby fork - I mean - what a name!!!) would just about hold 6 of us!!! he he he - can't wait.

I understand the hospice's reaction to about 50 noisy bikes...I remember going to visit one of the kids from one of my schools in one - one of the parents said that she thought a bombhad dropped! Meanwhile whatever happens it'll be a good weekend and we'll have fun and they'll get money!

Keep on praying for sunshine - it finally looks like summer here!!!

If the weather's good then Squire's will be packed..... I've asked permission and it OK to go round with "buckets" and harass the general public (nicely of course) for donations. The raffle tickets will be on sale to anyone and everyone on Saturday too, so that should bump up the funds a bit :mand:

I'm getting all nervous and excited now!!!! :on: :mand:

I've finally got my finger out folks, here's what's happening when :mand:

Me and dazzi will arrive at Squire's at about 10.30 Saturday morning.

Everyone else can arrive sometime after that.... Midday would be good as that gives plenty of time to pitch tents and have a chat etc.

So......

Saturday

12.00pm - Arrive
3pm - 6pm - Ride out, including stop for food and refreshments
6pm - 8pm - Chill, chat, beer etc
8pm - Band 1
9pm - Super duper raffle
10pm - Band 2

Sunday

9am - Judging for the bike show
10am - Cheque presentation
11am - Short ride out for lunch, then back to Squires for prize giving

There will be maps showing the route for the rides and I'll put my phone number on too just in case.
We're going to keep the speed down when we're out. That should make it easier to keep everyone together and hopefully we won't attract any attention from the local plod.

The weather's looking good so far

See you all soon!

bigredduke

Tell us the rideout route - ah go on, go on, you know you want to!

benson
11-06-2006, 07:44 PM
Itinerary or however you spell it looks good - will you be able to post an on line version of the route? (for those of us who will need to chase you round the countryside looking and listening for monnies to join you later in the day)

I know I won't be leaving here (as in London) much before midday so I hope to be at the kwalitteeeee hotel (selby fork of all places! - far canal!!!) late afternoon and from there will probably either aim to find you or just catch up with you all back at Squires - think the latter is more likely as the ride up is about 200 miles!!!

Anyway - let's hope the weather holds!!!

Tigerlily
11-06-2006, 07:49 PM
I can tell you where we're going but dazzi is doing the route.

We're off to........

Wait for it..........

A pub called.........

"The Blue Bell Inn" at Arkendale on the outskirts of Knaresborough!

Unless dazzi's bike continues to play up in which case we'll go round the block to a place called Squires :chuckle:

I'll get the route details off dazzi and i'll post something up so that you know where we are benson. It's about 10 minutes off the A1(M) if anyone wants to meet us there without going round the back roads.

benson
11-06-2006, 07:52 PM
Cheers Tiger Lil - I'd love to try and hook up with you and if I know where I'm going I might just get there (though that's not a certainty to you understand!!!)

REALLY hope Dazzi's Bike gets sorted out - it's so frustrating when they just don't go and you have no idea why - well that's the boat I'm usually in anyway!!!

Good luck with getting it fixed !!!

Would anyone be interested in helping out with the ride on Saturday?

We're not entirely sure how many will be in the group and it'd be useful to have a couple of people on "standby" who know the route who can help to keep the group together and stop people from getting lost!

Locals would be best but I'm not fussy and the route is easy to learn :)

Let me know if you're interested and I'll give you the details.

Due to sheer stupidity on my part, the venue for the rideout has had to change. We're now going about a mile further to the Blue Bell at Arkendale.

I'll change the directions and email them tonight.

Does anyone else want me to email maps and directions? - it'd save me getting them printed and then forgetting to bring them! I'll print a few anyway. Have I mentioned that I've got a lousy memory? That's why I've got my name on my bike!

I'll stop rambling now.

oops, nearly missed this one!

I was thinking we can ride up there...have a drink and a natter and head back. If anyone does want a bite to eat though then that's fine.

We'll have plenty of time to get something to eat before we leave and I imagine that most people wait until we get back to Squires for their teas.

Squires cater for all tastes and do everything from choccy and snacks to 3 course meals if I remember correctly (don't expect napkins and tableclothes though! :chuckle:)

If we get back at 6 then that gives us 2 hours to get some tea before the first band comes on at 8pm
