View Full Version : frame number/ engine number
Could a few of you guys check the way the numbers are punched on the frame and engine block on their bike ?
frame is on the right hand side, headstock.
engine is on the left hand side, bellow the engine cover.
i would like to know if it is punched using a neat writing, or if it is punched using dots to form letters and numbers.
the reason i ask is because on the m600 i had, the numbers were neatly punched in. on the 900 however, the letter are formed using dots, a bit like an old school dot matrix printer.
somehow, the reg number of my 900 is recorded as belonging to a cat c write-off(repairable) m600. i am wondering if it could be a clone.
the punched numbers were always a question mark to me.
also, the number contain a 600M... as did my 600, does this indicate the number comes from a 600 bike ?

The frame number is punched onto the right side of the headstock using a very fine and neat punch. Im sure the 600m denotes a 600 bike which suggests the bike was originally a 600 or that following write off a replacement frame was acquired from a 600 Monster.
Hope this helps you

this is a weird one.
on the insurer's database , it is a m600, cat C. crashed repairable.
on the v5, it has the 600 frame number, but a 900 engine number. (and 904cc), all the numbers match. both frame and engine numbers are punched in using dots. i was weary of that when i bought it, but couldnt see traces of filler or anything to indicate the numbers were false.
my guess is that it started as a 600, was then crashed, and had an engine replacement from a 900. And the insurers database wasnt updated..
would anybody have a different theory ?
is the frame on a 600 exactely the same as on the 900 ?
should i call my lawyer ?

Both sets of numbers on my 93 900 are stamped using small dots.
Have you bought a lemon?
ok, so i am reassured now, because the only grey area was on the punched dots.
so it seems some frame had "dotted" number..
in fact it all ties in, because the model of the bike on both the V5 and insurance database is specified as "unkown". normal, i guess, since it's a 600 with a 900 lump.
i just hope the frame is able to cope with the engine, if the 600 frame is any different from the 900.
so i wouldnt say it is a lemon, or a ringer, but it has an history.
All other parts are m900 (forks, brakes, swingarm...)
