I have a G4 Mac and its been working just fine until the other day. I put it to sleep and then stupidly turned it off at the wall. Then when i turned it on again its all gone buggered up. The monitor is saying 'no connection' and the hard drive is just not turning on at all. The light on the on button comes on when i hold it in but then thats it once i let go it goes off again. I don't have the mac connected to the internet. I have checked the fuse in the plug and changed it and still it wont work.
Anyone got any ideas that may help me?
I have a new printer i would like to get up and running on it and i cant do anything until i can start the mac.
I'm not a happy joolie .
Thanks in advance for any help you bright lot might be able to offer

sounds like motherboard or power supply. but being a pc guy dont count on that too much.
pcs are like bikes in a way, if you stop start stop start they will **** out sooner.
if its feasible leave your pc on 247, sitting there idling away quietly wont do it any harm.

Hi J,
I'm not a Mac guy (or Anorak) but I had a look on the web for you and most answers point to resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). I pasted the procedure below from the following site: http://www.macworld.com/forums/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB3&Number=351590&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=&fpart=
It mentions the symptoms your Mac is having and possible solution; it also mentions a possible dead memory battery.
Like I say I'm a PC guy so double check with rogerg if you are not familiar with this procedure.
Darry.
1. Shut down and let the computer cool for at least 5 minutes.
2. Disconnect all cables except the power cord. Touch any metal surface on the computer to ground yourself. (Norm note: better yet, ground yourself with a static-discharge bracelet. I bought one for about $5 at the local Radio Shack and connected its aligator clip to the metal frame of my G4)
3. Remove the power cord and open the computer.
4. Press the power button on the front of the Mac (to discharge any residual power in the Power Supply capacitors)
5. Remove the PRAM battery and leave out for at least 10 minutes (a good opportunity to check the battery voltage here).
6. Find the reset button on the motherboard. It is very small and probably unlabeled, and should be the only button there.
5. Press and hold the button for 10 seconds. ]Do this ONLY once.
6. Close the computer, connect all cables, and try to power up.
Hmmm, Apple Mac, stick it in a sack with a few kittens and throw it in the canal! HTIOH

Back to the subject, it's probably the battery which when dead messes up the power management. You can get replacements from Maplins for about £5.
G4 Mac should open up nice and easy, battery looks like an AA but about a third of the length.
You could also try zapping the PRAM (though Darry's advice will do that by removing the power) by holding down Command-Option-P-R (that's Apple-Alt-P-R) while powering on the computer, once it does the start up sound for a second time it is reset and you can release the keys.

Naturally, I am toying with the idea of 42" of WXGA HDMI monitor, but it does cost more than my bike did. Should be good though... Will review when it rolls up...

Go to macosx.com put in your problem and you will get a reply next day.
Once you get sorted you'll love it, mac,s are much better than pc but nobody who runs a pc will ever admit it, i use both and the mac is a far more advanced piece of kit.

hahahaha!!! :D im not sure if you are joking or not...
incase you aren't; apple have now approached Intel to manufacture their hardware because apple cannot ramp their proprietary hardware up enough to be competitive in the personal computer market!
the good news is that you will be able to build a super cheap pc with a mac OS for 1/4 of the price of the cheapest mac and all the power. :p

I would rather be out riding than soldering, maybe you can build me one?

04-01-2006, 11:01 PM
you one day will be able to do that....or you could buy a machine with Tiger now or a machine with a 5 years on repatched piece of doggy doos called xp? I use both and have no great loyalty to either, no OS is perfect but do you have any idea how many years I (most of us) have lost? tears shed? blood spilt? screaming at PC's?
A.x
ps.a few things in life you get what you pay for -not many- but macs IMO are worth it given the time spent fixing/screaming at pcs......years I tell you!! (you can tell I am a bit scarred?!)

Far more advanced?...how?.....OK, so that would explain why Mac OS finally gave up and built their OSX on a Unix base....thats the software dealt with....hardware, the best thing about Macs has only ever been the Motorola chip, which is great for graphics applications and also appears to be quicker due to the architecture and software package build.....BUT Mac are now going to introduce their new best ever machine with the CPU made by...do do do do weeeeeeeeee INTEL inside......it wont even have the credibility of an AMD, besides which the true cool users run AMD based machines with Linux.
Macs are OK, they're no better than anything else, but their users over the years have become too anal, and always seem to have a ...hehe "chip" on their shoulders, over the years I have used both, I started off with Macs, but they are certainly not the machine of choice when actual computing/processing power is called for....put it like this....they draw a nice pic, so theyre an expensive crayon really:p

It's unix based? so? your point??? it works better than xp?! hello?? that is not really the point though is it. And as for snobbery I have unix friends and believe me they are beyond cool (but not in such a good way!)
If you work with crayons you want the best, it's not about a green start button after all.

I have a mac that I wear at night in Battersea Park, and also a leather mac which I use for goth nights and parties with Prince Harry.
It may well be your power supply.
You may well need a Mac specialist having to take a look.!
Good luck :)
