Hi there...been reading through all the threads on clip-ons [yes, I make a point of doing a search now :D]

I have two questions: 1. Are there any tall [> 6ft] riders here using clip-ons? If so, any problems? And 2. Is it a big job for a complete novice to fit them?

I thank you.

I was a novice when i fitted mine, a total novice in fact! Very easy to do, just need a set of allen keys for the fittings, and a thin screwdriver and some wd40 to slide under the grips in order to get them off the old bars.

Does anyone have the ones from Rizoma? Or know whether they are any good?

Like PD said it's a fairly simple DIY job, but there's a lot of different types of bars available. Some take more effort to fit needing holes drilled for switchgear location (I just filed the pins off on mine TBH), or mods to hydraulic lines and/or wiring.

Once you decide to buy a particular make post up for advice on how to fit, as I'm sure someone in the club will have been there before :)

Well I'd narrowed it down to two - ones from Rizoma and ones from CycleCat. I guess my decision was going to be based around how easy they were to fit :)

CycleCat (http://www.spareshack.com/cgi-bin/browse-no-frames.cgi?view=item&item=dbr03_tit&session=78032727)
Rizoma (http://www.rizoma.com/ma201a.html)

the cyclecat hear is totally over engineered and in most cases ugly. Not too bad on its own but fitted they don't keep the style of the bike. the Rizoma stuff always looks good so I'd say go for the proper clip on look instead of those odd riser things the cat has.

I'm 6' 2 and have DP clip ons and dont have too much of a problem. The palms of my hands are a bit sore after a longish journey but apart from that ok

Cheers Stuart. I'm going to go for the Rizoma ones [MA201A]. Has anyone fitted these before? Any hints, tips etc would be greatly appreciated :D

Eonan,

Jay had a set of these on his 600. The ones in the photo look a little different to the picture in the catalogue, but I'm sure they are by Rizoma.

He's sold the monster now and not sure if he still logs on to the forum. It might be worth a PM or email to see if he fitted them himself?

they seem a bit overdone? the cheap spareshack ones are a third the price and a lot tidiier. they go with the clocks though..

Ditto Yerbs, and that's why I went for a set of the Redline bars that Spareshack sell myself.

Might even lob another set on the trike ;)

hang on, hang on...I know not of these cheap spareshack ones. The Rizoma ones are £144. Are the Spareshack ones cheaper? Have you any photos you could show me?

That photo of Jays looks gorgeoeus though [well I think so anyway...god it's all so person-centred here!]

Spareshack currently have two pair of the tidy and well priced (£50+VAT) kind of clip ons on eBay.

Now I like that price a lot...if someone could just let me have a sneaky peek at them in action...

I really like them. Does anyone happen to know whether any drilling is necessary? Or is it a lovely screwdriver, allen key and wd40 job? :D

proberly

recent bikes have a locating lug on the switchgear so everything lines up

the clipons may have a pre drilled hole

if not then its time to break out the drill, i cant imagine getting the hole in the right place is easy, my preference would be to file down the lug on the switchgear then you can place it wherever you want.

As Scotty said you can drill the alloy bars to take the reference pins, but its a sod to get right so I opted to file the pins off mine. You may need to tape under the switchgear to get them to tighten up properly afterwards.

Mine have the optional risers fitted. I found the low setting too extreme for my back without rearsets, but the higher position is spot on

I would say the only minus point (from a design perspective) of the redlines, compared to bars like Rizoma, RR, DP etc is the need to do the clamp up really tight on the leg to stop the bar creeping forward under heavy loads - such as braking. The other bars use extra bolts in the standard bar riser holes to stop this.

Oh and check the caps in the clamps arn't over length. One of mine was and damaged the top of the leg when I did it up to clamp the bar

I've posted this up soooooo many times I'm surprised you missed it

I have a pair of RR clips that are very similar to those of spareshack. To be honest I didn't fit them, but my mechanic started on about using longer cables etc etc, anyhow it didn't need them in the end and I like the bike much more. I'm 6ft btw and n real problems - seems to corner better because you tend to naturally lean in. That said, if I changed again I'd go for flat drag bars.
