Does anyone know the chain pitch for an M600

520 as standard and it's worth getting a good spec one, with a high wear/tensile rating . Cheapo o-ring chains stretch and wear out really fast on monsters, so it pays to get a good one.

Hmm,
The question was regarding the PITCH of the chain which is 5/8" (15.875mm)

The Int No. (520 etc) refers to the WIDTH of the chain.

520 is sufficient for a M600

Why bother?

A 520 chain copes fine with the power of a 600, and even a 900 when maintained properly - more so if you buy a good quality one?

The 530 chain is a lot heavier, and soaks up more of the engines power due to higher friction & mass. You may even struggle to fit a 530 because the standard 520 runs really close (see photo) to the hoop mounting bracket on the swingarm. With a bit of increased side play as the chain loosens up, I'm sure there would be expensive contact.

You can get a 530 width rear sprocket made (B &C sprockets), at a cost of about £30, but you will also need to have a matching front custom made. I was quoted around £35 for this a few weeks back by D.S. Gear Co. in Lincs.

I actually looked at the merits of a 520/530 upgrade for the M900 trike, as I have my doubts the 520 was up to pulling the extra loads. In the end I compromised and went to H/D 525, which is a pretty easy swap. Just got an 39T alloy rear sprocket made to suit, fitted a 916/S4 style 15T Renthal front and added a heavy duty DID gold X-ring chain.

Because the engine I am using has a 530 sprocket and I won't be able to get a 520.

Thanks for the other info though - that's really helpful, will get myself a 530 sprocket from them. Do you know if they do a dished rear sprocket or spacer so that I can run a 190, 200 or maybe even a 210 rear tyre?

I'm a bit confused because AFAIK the 520 gearbox sprocket was standard issue on all but the S4 monster - just what engine are you using? :confused:

Same goes for the proposed 210 rear tyre, which will require radical mods to get in. I think anything wider than 160 x 17 is a non starter in the standard swingarm, and you'll need the wider arm (and wheel rim) off a 900 monster to increase to even a 170 or 180 section rear tyre.

You could get dished sprockets and/or spacers custom made, but B&C only offer flat sprockets to order. Chop builders often offset engines in the frame to get round chain alignment problems This would be a nightmare to acheive on a monster due to the way the engine hangs from the trellis, and further complicated by the swingarm mounting off the back of the engine.

I can see it being a real hassle getting front & rear wheels to line up?

Quite right...

As I understand it the initial number 5 in 520, 525, 530 etc.. denotes the pitch in multiples of 1/8" - i.e. 5 x 1/8" = 5/8"

The second 2 digits 20, 25, 30 etc.. denotes the internal width (sprocket width) of the chain - again in multiples of 1/8"

20 indicates 2.0 x 1/8" = 1/4"
25 indicates 2.5 x 1/8" = 5/16"
30 indicates 3.0 x 1/8" = 3/8" and so on....

So the 520 size definition is actually a combined pitch & width measurement ;)
