TV licences:
I have decided not to renew a TV licence and this has brought up some debate with a friend of mine.
1. If you dont have a TV licence does that mean you shouldnt have a TV in your house
2. If you are allowed to keep a TV in your house can you watch DVD's on it.
3. I always thought that the idea of vans that can see when you are watching telly by some sort of survellance computer was the biggest load of B*llocks but assumed they went round checking visually addresses that didnt have licences
can anyone shed any light on any of these questions

1 not necessarily
2 suppose so
3 complete boll@cks. they just need to look on your roof, that gives them a clue..
my austrian boss has a dish to get german TV, and obviously, a TV. he has got away with not getting a licence for years. he told them he wasnt receiving BBCs

If you have any instrument with a TV channel receiver like a VCR (even SKY-aka Pikey vision) rigged up you could be in trouble. The obvious choice is to watch DVDs on the pooter. If you had a big plasma etc without a tuner working as a DVD monitor only, then you should be fine and you can righteously tell them to go **** their grandmothers. This practice is in fact legal in this country.

Sorry to upset but this doesn't count. You need a TV license for TV ANY receiving eqipment in the UK even if you don't watch BBC. Even water pikeys need a license for their ickle TVs, although with no fixed abode it would be hard to get a prosecution so they wouldn't bother.
Sucks, don't it?
My boss only uses her telly for dvd's and doesn't have a licence.
1. You can have a tv in your house, you're just not allowed to use it to pick up a broadcast.
2. No problem. TV Licencing will however need a declaration from you that you're not using it for watching normal telly, and they'll hassle you lots to keep confirming this is still the case.
3. I was told once that the detector vans could home in on the frequency given off by a crt. But what they do for lcd's and plasma tellys I don't know!
'They', on their homepage, state that they can measure the magnetic field emission from your telly. If possible, I don't know how they distinguish tellys from computer screens or find non tube TV's.
If I didn't live with a wuss that paid at once I wouldn't pay. They can't fine me on the presence of an aerial.

I have had a TV for decades.
I have not had a TV licence for decades.
You CAN have a TV, or VCR or anything else that is capable of recieving TV transmissions.
The wording in law, goes something like this :-
If you use a TV or any other device to receive or record TV programmes (for example, a VCR, set-top box, DVD recorder or PC with a broadcast card) - you need a TV Licence. You are required by law to have one.
"to receive or record" are the magic words to take note of.
I've had them at the door & sending me letters, but the fact is, as I use them to watch DVDs, Videos, Sony Playstation, there is fu*k all they can do about it Sammye.
I told the last bloke who came around, that I wouldn't pay to watch the cr*p they showed, even if the licence was only 10p a year. He walked off a little dejected.
We need more people to refuse to pay through the nose for watching the trite cr*p they show.
TV detector vans pick up the emissions from the reference crystals used to 'pull' a signal off the incoming radio waves, the computer DataBase just tells 'em where to look for likely violations.

they wont fine you because of an aerial, but it gives them a clue as to where to look.
as for their detector, we all have a good giggle everytime someone mentions it at the office( its a radio comms company, Ali Gidly..).
i'd like to see their "detector's evidence" be used in a court case, just once !

When THEY come knocking at the door don't invite them in. They can only gain access if they have a warrent or if you let them in.

It's not that much money?! you are receiving the best radio in the world too, I happily pay for one not through fear of "them" buy because I use it and because it's worth it. Otherwise it would be wall to wall adverts, corporate spun news and Rupert Murdoch tie ins.

Watched one episode at the Mill, last Monster weekend, and saw a few others at Jan's place.
I really can't be bothered with TV at my place. Far rather do other things.
As far as I'm concerned, except for the odd drama or documentry, it's 95% dross, and not worth a penny of the licence fee.
Much rather watch DVD films.

Has anyone noticed that when you buy a TV these days they won't let you take it out of the shop before filling in a form with your name and address etc, which I believe is for the TV Licensing people, also has anyone spotted a detector van lately?? I believe they may well be a thing of the past now but don't quote me on that!

Before coming here I was studying theoretical electronics and EM propagation (antennas, microwaves, etc.). Now I'm at Surrey (CCSR), studying MIMO and multihop. Primarily intended for mobile phones, but applicable to anything wireless.
Where are you?
I am now working for filtronic, still near Leeds. been there 4 years. i am doing some design, R&d, bit of everything, mainly on GaAs MMICs but also on MIC, up to about 20GHz. I am more of a hardware man though, background is semiconductor physics.
My PhD supervisor was chris snowden, he is now your vice chancelor, i beleive !
send him my regards, if you know him. I was also working for him at filtronic before he left for surrey. really nice guy.
have you started writing up ?
oh, reminds me, we have one of your lot in our office (leaving shortly though) James wong (syngapore).. u know him ? he might have been there before your time though. i think he graduated 2002.

Have to agree with Yerbs on this one. The BBC websites are second to none and still relatively impartial. We can recieve the BBC radio stations over here via a satellite reciever and after listening to the Yank dross you really do appreciate good old auntie sometimes, even if it is just to remind us that there is a big bad world beyond the USA. ;) Sure I have to pay a few dollars a month to subscribe but in my opinion it is well worth it as you can't beat driving down the strip listening to England reclaim the ashes can you :D

Despite not having a TV for many years, I was regularly sent a letter asking why I didn't have a TV license... the reply form didn't even have an option for 'I don't have a TV' !
Even better though, was when I was at University. A group of us clubbed together to buy a fridge, and to make like easier, they gave me the cash, and I - as the most solvent at the time - payed with the plastic. I filled in my name and address for the warranty...
The following week I recieved a letter from the TV Licensing people. They claimed that I had recently bought a colour television but they had no record of my getting a license. They knew this because the shop I bought it from had informed them
I very politely wrote back and explained that I had not bought a TV - but had in fact bought a fridge. I pointed out that (a) it was not a colour fridge, but a brown and white one!, and (b) it didn't pick up the BBC.
I did ask for them send send me a form for a Brown and White Fridge license, but they never replied :D :D

I did hardware (mainly physical parameters of antennas, waveguides etc.) during my MSc, but now I find myself knocking code all day. Funny how things end up.
I know of Snowden, but have never met him. I've only been here a year in January and am about to write my transfer in the not so distant future. Hopefully I'll be wrapping it up in two years time, but you never know around here...
Hence I don't know your Singaporian office mate, but we do have rather many Wongs, Xians, Tians and Wangs etc.
oh well, enjoy it whilst it lasts, they probably were some of the best years of my life.
let us know how you get on, or if you hit any glitches i can help you with.
are you doing european microwave next september ? (manchester)
I'll probably try and put something together for publication in that.
I'm quite sick of being a student to be honest. Financially crippled and working hours that never end. Not sure what other UK Uni's are like, but if they're like Surrey I'm glad I did my undergrad in Sweden. There was so much more to do!
Cheers for the offer, I'll make sure to let you know if there's anything. And of course I offer likewise...
I havn't heard of the European Microwave, but don't think I'm going since it's not my field (I think). Hopefully I'll have my first publication soon though and get to go somewhere.
If you go, send me a copy will you? It'll tell quite a lot about what your specific field is I guess.
It's all about microwave, really, the equivalent of the american MTTs. i guess with snowden chairing it, he will probably get your lot to manchester.
on www.chez.com/sdavid/, you will find my publications and thesis...the joy of latex...
but i am sure you will find that wat you did during the phd and what you end up doing as a job are completely different..
did you do your undergrad at chalmers ?
Only been here a year as I said. But it is my impression that students only get sent somewhere when they publish. I'm full sure there will be people from Surrey though.
LaTeX rocks. However I recommend Lyx which is based on LaTeX and does the same, but also presents the output on the screen in real time (like Word).
No matter what you study or which jobs you have during a lifetime it's never the same. I therefore belive in being able to teach yourself anything so as to be adaptible. I am fx., currently learning how to conduct research which may be useful anytime and anywhere.
I went to Lund, but Chalmers are pretty good at microwaves i understand.

The seller is legally obliged to inform TV Licensing, the name and address of anyone who buys equipment capable of recieving tv.
Having said that, I think it's true to say, that if you have a tv license for your home tv, it covers you for portable equipment as well. Such as in a caravan etc. So I don't belive there'd be a problem for her, unless she hasn't got a tv licence for her home, in which case, she can epect TVL to be sending her letters very soon.
Either way...considering the multiple, hard detectable, ways there are to receive TV these days (cpu, phone, etc.) and the work + cost of finding people who don't fancy paying. I think it's about time they abandone this old fashioned, extra Nazi tax.

The Communications (television Licenses) regulations 2004 state that the Meaning of "television receiver"
9. - (1) In Part 4 of the Act (licensing of TV reception), "television receiver" means any apparatus installed or used for the purpose of receiving (whether by means of wireless telegraphy or otherwise) any television programme service, whether or not it is installed or used for any other purpose.
so it doesn't matter if you are using your tv as a potato crusher, if it's installed in your house etc etc blah .......
where i live, the paramilitaries used to threaten the tv vans with shooting if they came into the areas. now with the peace process under way they're in snooping. now most people have bought one, so much for the peace dividends!!

This is just very clever bullsh*t wording. It is entirely legal to have a tv in your house to watch DVDs, Playstation etc. I know, because I don't have a license for my tv, and never will. I've had them at the door, and told them so. There is nothing they can do, as long as you don't use it TO RECIEVE.

It was a court ruling back in the 80's I believe. The ruling still stands.
My tv is unable to recieve anything, by the simple fact that there is no ariel plugged into it.
I only ever watch telly when I'm at Jan's place, and then it's only documentry stuff we watch. I have no real interest in tv, and never have. I do like to watch films tho', so I rent loads of dvds to watch.
