View Full Version : 4X4 drivers do they think they are 'ard

Following on from the highly enlightening thread I thought I should start another in relation to 4X4 drivers!
Are they wanna be gangsters / toffs who think they are tough sitting behind their oversized vehicle or are they the Upper Crust of Society.
You decide.....

Well I'm going off roading at the weekend in mid wales with 5 landrovers. Me and jen on our bikes. 4X4 drivers off road are fine.
4X4 drivers dropping kids off at school...well...not so fine.
Sorry i can't cast my vote.

I got one - they're great. I don't take crap from nobody. A Mercedes Sprinter van tried it on. He lost big style. Got him up on his nearside wheels with his off-side totally up in the air. He'll look over his houlder next time he changes lane. Try that with a Smart car. There's nothing wrong with them in the right hands. Obviously I have those said hands. ;)

Its a simple answer, if the vehicle is in the middle of town then they should be shot, if it is in the countryside then thats fine. Generally if the vehicle is more than 10 years old it'll be in the hands of the right people, new 4WD off roaders are bought by
i wont say it.

Agree with Jules, and Jen etc etc..
I'v escaping to the country next week (yet suprisingly I don't need a TV program to do all the thinking for me..) and will NEED a 4x4 to carry out my year round work when the weather in the sticks turns nasty. My Mazda simply wont cut the mustard, though I won't be parting with it. And then at the weekends I'll be hitting the mud. Hurrah for the choice of vehicles we have in this country.
PS, giant street 4x4's like Lexus, X5's etc are a waste of space, but we still supposedly live in a free country, and their no more anti social than bikes with loud pipes etc etc.

Townies in a 4X4 might think they're 'ard, but in fact they are the same type of people (Chavvy, Pikey), who think they have class, but are in fact very 'tacky' in their common tastes.
Either that, or they're gay.

Nope c'mon say it.......
I'm the driver of a new 4x4 and want to hear what you think I am.....
If you think I should be shot - come round and see me - or I can come and see you
And didge - I'm not Chavvy or Pikey either mate. And if you think I'm gay - then quite frankly you can bend over whilst I f*ck you up the arse  ;) (just kidding ok)
Spacemonkeys quite right - each to their own - no more anti social than bikes with loud pipes etc..
Joking aside:
I would have thought that as a group of bikers you'd know better than to pick a group of people for what they ride / drive and brand them all the same. Obviously not - and that's sad.
I don't know, I'm not on this forum for a while, I come back and someones having a go at me.....

so KK, why did you buy a big 4x4.
Do you use it off road a lot?
Do you have a caravan or boat or large trailer to pull with it?
Do you have a small penis?
I'm guessing if the answer to Q's 1 and 2 are no then 3 should be a certain Yes.
Ok so you have your own reasons and its entirely up to you what you do and why, so enjoy it. :D

Easy! you did ask PD for his opinion after all so no point getting upset about it when he replies (and he is an opinionated grump so what did you expect?) it was obviously a wind up.. albeit an amusing one. Despite round these ere parts being most assuradly rural the queues of mums clogging up the roads in their tanks, whinging about petrol prices (buy a smaller car love) and generally slowing the world down does get on ones norks rather. Most importantly they are ugly and one can not abide that. For those that have a need for them..bravo. Everyone else? well each to their own blah de blah IMO if thats what you like etc etc etc.

Thankyou indeed, i think you'll find that when people ask for advice I am happy to give it, always honest too as most people want to hear the truth. In this case you did not ask for advice and i was not aiming at you in the beginning, only when you took my reply did i reply to you in a general term.
You seemed to take offence that anyone should take the mick out of 4wd cars or drivers, If you look at the poll results you will see the majority of people think like I do, I was merely trying to find out why you purchased one and gave you a chance to give your reason? Yes I did it in a 'comical/cruel/sarcastic' (delete as applicable) way and maybe it went over your head, was just trying to find out your reasons as I am not against 4wd's, just when they are used in ways that do not require them like shopping, childcare and commuting.
If this is the way this forums going then your welcome to it - I used to enjoy being on here - met lots of nice people, and had some good times - but If its going the way of visor down then thats sad - this is the reason I don't post on there anymore.
Yes you do post on here or i would not be replying
I have never been on visordown so cannot compare, if you want help I'll help, if you want honest advice I'll happily give it, if as in this thread we are talking about a subject where the title reads 'do 4x4 drivers think their hard' then here is my chance to say what I feel about them in an honest way, please feel free to do the same instead of complaining and running away.
We've lost members before 'cos of this kind of sh1t - anyone seen queenie Gpants lately??? - don't let this go the same way as that.
I don't verbally abuse anyone in person (without good reason) but will happily say what i feel on a subject. anyone who happens to fit into that and wants to take offence, well either they fit the cap and/or I welcome the response. Healthy debate is all about different views.
I als choose my audience, longstanding members who know the score we can all be ourselves. New members are here for fun, advice and more, to them I am always polite.
So Kev, in this public thread that is set out to have a pop at 4x4 drivers, why don't you give us your view of them?

4x4's should only be owned by those who need them. Make it illegal a bit like in Greece where only services are allowed diesel engines. I hate them being used for the school run "but I feel so safe", but I really hate them being used to carve up the countryside in the name of recreation. That said I also hate predjudice, and it is a free country (ahem). Now if you don't mind, I'm away out side to stand with the smokers.

Hi Yorkie, Yes it is a std ex military 90GS. I ran it for a little while on the military issue G90's which are a vast improvement on the old XCL's off road. Its now on a set of 235/70R16 Technic Amazon's from Bronco. They are quite amazing. I was worried I'd not have the power to spin them up to clean them, I don't but its never been an issue.. They'r even good on road too (for an open block tyre) :)
Chappers did keep asking me to get out and show my face ... maybe I will .. but i'll either turn up in my Land Rover Defender or perhaps the Discovery
(PS its a 3.9V8 Auto .. usually riles the Do-gooders that).
I also have three bikes .. the S4Monsta, an 800cc Supermoto in the making and an old Kawasaki 400cc twin.
It's funny but I have to put up with the same sh*te on the Land Rover forums about w*nkers on with bikes with no respect for speed limits, the noise the pr*cks make blah blah blah
I think that there should be a seperate forum for whinging, crabby dogooders that can't take see the light of day coz they have each others heads shoved so far up each others a***s.
Not very catchy but if we get all the 4x4/biker/hiker do-gooders over to that one maybe everyone can just get on with enjoying life.
PS Hello .. names Tom .. not been on Forum for a while but like to check in every now and then !!

A bit of fence sitting here...
I've driven 4 x 4s for over 15 years now, but until a year ago it was always for work. As an earthworks engineer, I actually need one, as we are building the roads that aren't there yet. Initially I used a LWB pick-up Landrover, then a Toyota Hi-Lux. Spent 2 years on-site full time with a designated Landrover Defender - initally a 110, but later changed to a 90. Also driven a Discovery occasionally.
My opinion is that if you need to go seriously off-road, then use a Landrover  - everything else just isn't up to it.
I've always despised people in 4x4's who only go off-road when they mount the kerb - what a waste of engineering and fuel  . And don't get me started about the school run  .
However, last year we inherited a Ford Maverick :o , and it's our only car.
In our defence, we were given it by Susan's mother - free. Also, we do actually live out in the country: Boughton Monchelsea - hence it is known as the Monchelsea Tractor :D .
Now, having got the thing, we will be fitting a tow bar and getting a trailer - ideally one that can be used for bikes as well as carrying loads.
It's fun to drive and visibility is great. It doesn't have bull bars, and has selectable 2wd or 4wd. Downside are the running costs... still it's not as bad as owning a Ducati.
I don't care what other people think I look like in it.

Our neighbour has a Nissan Navaro - that's one mother of a truck! Mind you, he works as a fencer, so it's justified (putting fence posts in, not pointing a little sword at other people).
Rog has been hankering after a 4x4, ever since his Dad sold his series II land rover. Unfortunately, he's got his eye on a Bowler Wildcat, which at £70,000 is a little out of our league! Also, you couldn't fit the dogs in the back.
We probably will get a 4x4 in the next few years, but it will be used for ferrying a lab and a retriever, towing bikes, and generally getting dirty - exactly what 4x4's are meant for.
As for them making people feel safe, they should read the EuroNCAP test results...

I don't undestand what all the fuss is about. Nobody has the right to tell someone else what kind of car to drive. I happen to live in the country, the roads round here don't get gritted in winter, I go off road regularly to shoot, I carry a lot of furniture around for my business, and I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is the perfect vehicle for me. However, if I did none of the above it would still be a great vehicle.
What is the objection to them? Is it their size? If so we should be moaning about anything bigger. Lets start on transits and stop when we get to juggernauts. How does someone else having a large vehicle impact you? I don't get it. Do you sit quite happily behind a Jag but grumble when there's a Jeep in front?
And I know it can't be a fuel consumption issue. My Jeep does 19 to the gallon. But if it was full of Mum and screaming brats on a school run, then thats 5 people doing 19 to the gallon. Now lets take a motorbike - maybe a Ducati Monster - commuting to work. Great, it might do 30 to the gallon, but with 1 person on it. And I think that it's a fair bet that a large percentage of bikes, particularly Ducatis, only get used in Summer to go out for a blast. Is that a good use of a valuable and dwindling resource? Next time a group of you go for a rideout why not double up. Each of you take another on pillion and leave half the bikes behind. Think of the petrol you'll save.
Are they anti-social in someway? Anyone with loud cans need not reply.
Surely if someone chooses to drive a particular type of vehicle and this has no impact on you, why bitch about it. I'm sure someone will say that they are entitled to their opinion, and they are just expressing it here. That's the line taken by the National Front and Combat 18. Sounds like motoring bigotry. We'd be the first to defend our right to use bikes if someone attacked it.
Live and let live.

I think you find most people including me were hitting the vote button with no great though, just a hatred for the school run 4x4 users and similar. Now things are getting serious and in need or well crafted words it all gets a bit hard to define so i wont bother. We will not pick on transits (right now) or larger vehicles unless they are being used when they dont ned to be. If the 4x4 is bursting to the brim with people, faces all squashed against the glass then a people carrier or volvo will surely do ;) any less than that and once again they are the wrong choice for towns.
Sorry, i'm getting all p*ss takey again

For once PD I tend to generally agree with you. I once owned a Cherokee and loved it. However there is the stock broker, city types who think a 4x4 is a must have for transporting their snotty sprogs and bumptious, lady muck wife omn the school run. They wouldnt know a green lane if it jumped up and punched them on their smug faces. 4x4 were ok when it was Land/Range Rovers, Jeeps and the like. But they now appear to have become penis extensions for yuppies. I mean BMW X5, Lexus thingy, Volvo watsit, that stupid Audi, etc etc.
I'm not picking on vans because they dont tend to take up more than 1 space in Tescos car park, they dont snarl up the road outside my kids school etc etc.
This is not jealousy if you've got money to throw away on an overblown van then why not an Audi S6, much cooler and understated and goes like stink. Unless your scared your kids will vomit due to the G force etc
Gilps
11-11-2005, 07:02 PM
Maybe I'm being a bit dim. It has been known. But I still don't get it. How can a Jeep or similar take up so much more room outside a school than an Audi A6, to the point where it offends you. My Jeep fits easily into a car parking space at the supermarket. It isn't that long, it may be 6-12 inches wider than an A6. So what's left? Just the height as far as I can see. Are you against tall cars?
You say it's not jealousy, then use words like "lady muck wife".
Vehicles like the X5 and Lexus are crap off road. They are meant to be on-road vehilces. Yet when people use them on the road they are ciritcised.
Our roads are wide enough to take articulated lorries. Surely a 4x4 is narrower.
The fact that StuartG says get an Audi A6 really just backs up my belief that this is just about personal taste. Why condemn somebody for choosing to drive something that they feel happy driving, when it doesn't affect anybody else.
I personally cannot see the point of 150+bhp super sports bikes on the road. But I do accept the right of the individuals who buy them to ride them. I nod at them just as I would acknowledge any other biker.
I haven't seen anybody on this thread slagging off supermotos and big trailies. Is that because they are bikes?
I am genuinely not trying to be argumentative. I just don't understasnd the dislike some people have for 4x4's.

Wasn't meant to offend and dont particularly have anything against 4x4 s. 4x4 s are designed primarily to go off road on occasion. But now they have yurned into a status symbol. Whilst I accept your argument about size + length, it has more to do with the people who drive them, or should I say are incapable of driving them properly.
I'm sure you have no problem in your 4x4 and similarly were you ever required to drive a van you wouldnt have a problem. If you said to the average 4x4 driver, drive a van, they would probably say they weren't able to. Whats the difference.
As I said it is more about the owners than the vehicles

I had a Landrover 90 some years ago - bloody loved it. I could fit 4 sheep in the back and all 6 bales of hay  Did change the petrol engine for a diesel tho.
As for people arguing with me - they always lost :D My wheels were bigger than they were
Changed for a 1 yr old Discovery for a bit more in the comfort stakes but couldn't fit the sheep in that nor sweep out the hay and it was the worst mistake (bar one) that I ever made - pile o ****e!
Would love another 90 but funds don't run to a turbo and i'd never get to race meetings with a N/A one unless I set off a week before

Don't worry, I'm not offended. I don't take any of the above comments personally as none of them were aimed persoanlly at me(i think). And whilst I do realise that most of this thread is meant to be taken lighthearetdly, I do believe that there is a general dislike for 4x4's and their drivers. I just don't understand why and that's what I'm trying to get at.
How can it be that a woman on the school run suddenly doesn't know how to drive, when last week in her Volvo estate, she coped as well as can be expected. :burnout:

the reasons why people don't like them are straightforward enough, some rational some not.... Some 4x4's are enormous and difficult to see around/over, they produce a lot more waste, on narrow (read English) roads the are a squeeze, they do kill people when idiots walk into them and they are not used (on the whole) for their intended purpose. And they are ugly. I actually have an ambivalent attitude to the things as I have far more serious things to worry and fret about (my inability to fly, dado rails, fat people, starbucks, my broadband connection and the price of decent wine in this country to name a few) If some folk feel the need to drive 5 foot of the ground then fair enough, apart from that I see very little reason why someone would want to drive around in a truck? I suppose having grown up in a Saudi Arabia and South Africa seeing someone in this country nipping down to tescos in a 3 litre mini bus to pick up some convenience food looks a bit daft. After all the 4x4 suv thing is a recent "must have accesory" and as far as I can tell the topography of the UK is the same as it ever was, in fact the roads are better.

Yey, great choice. Those things are so cool! I go to Colorado a lot, and that is the land of the big truck, but they do use them as they are intended. Well, most of the time - there is a small amount of posing involved.
I never realised how big those Rams really are, until I saw a Range Rover next to one. It made the Range Rover look about the size of a Renault Scenic.
Although they are cool, they really are too big for this country - parking spaces in the states are definitely a good foot wider than here, and all the roads are straight and wide....

£100k worth of stereo gear
Only seats 2.
is fitted with 2 x heavy duty alternators & 9 heavy duty batteries.
With the stereo cranked up does 2MPG
With the engine off & stereo turned up it takes 10mins to flat all 9 batteries.

Banshee - that really is a gorgeous looking car. I'm not familiar with Chesil. Is it a repro?
The garage next door to me has a deal with the local Porsche dealer to do all their MOT's and they get some locvely stuff in. They had a Speedster in a couple of weeks ago. Mint condition.
Anyway. Conituing the line of this thread. What is it like off-road? There doesn't look to be much ground clearance.

I've got a 4x4 albeit a little 1800 cc Suzuki sidekick (I believe they were the original Vitara over there) works for me. Not bad off road either, got us up the mountain last winter several times for a spot of skiing, when all the 2wds were turning round half way up.
I do live in the desert so it comes in handy occasionally

I don't get this at all.
I've just replaced my wifes 10 year old 2.8 auto car with a new SWB Shogun. her old car got 22 mpg, the Shogun gets 28. Her old car took up more space and went through tyres more quickly than the Shogun will.
The high driving position gives me better visability and the whole feel of the car makes me drive more slowly. Despite what NCAP tests may say, I'm happier when she leaves work at 12pm to come home in it than anything else we've had - especially in winter ( we get proper snow !! )
However, because it's a 4 x 4 we're bad people ??
Anyway, off to bed now, got the school run to do tomorrow before Sainsbury's......

I bought a big 4x4 in 96 cause my jeep was falling apart (it was a new 93) I work as a carpenter here in the US and quite often way out in the sticks, dirt road and no road. I didnt buy another jeep cause my tools were stolen out of the old one. The Land Rover defender 90 was my first choice, but my mum is 80 something and cant handle bouncy rides. I ended up with a suburban, it can carry full sheets of plywood all of my tools ,table saw,the works it locks has alarms four wheel drive is very comfortable ,particularly on distance (2250 in three days) I can sleep in it. I get my mates in with our mountain bikes up lousy roads that I could never manage in a normal car or any thing like a Subaru these roads have pot holes that can suck up a whole wheel. I hate it when Im in it on my own, even going to a job. Its big bulky thirsty and way OTT. It wont do as good a job as a landrover in the rough its not supposed to, but carry 9 people or 5 people and lots of junk into the sticks its pretty good. For non work short trips I use an 88 Ford Escort GT and its a bit more fun too!

Banshee that is sooo cool!! Ive always wanted a VW Beetle but due to my mechanical retardation have never ended up getting one.
Get one, I'm mechanically inept and mine was p1ss easy to work on although it's a bit tight access-wise in the engine bay. Even changing the plugs was a pain in the arris.
Was peanuts to run, no tax as it was pre '73 and classic insurance.
Flogged her and bought my Monster instead.
Gilps .. hat off to you for sensible well worded arguments.
Generally a 4x4 takes up no more road space than any family estate. In many cases less.
They are no wider.. and take up less floor space than many sports cars !!
Fuel consumption on diesels is around the 32-34mpg mark on ave.. freelander up around 42ish .. some of the Jap SUV's are good too.
As for 'knowing how to drive them' .. the same is true (unfortunately) for a lot of bike riders not able to ride to even 50% of bikes ability.
I guess i think that everyone is missing the point here .. light hearted or not the same arguments are being made against bikes in car forums, the ramblers just hate everyone etc etc.
Until we all learn to live and let live, the minority 'dogooder' pressure groups will keep on eroding our lifestyles.
I have just heard about the situation with trails and off roading over the weekend affecting all off roaders, car and bike alike.
For chrissakes BOATS and RUPPS only took about 6% of available lanes and tracks .. and now it looks like it's all to be lost because of well organised minority pressure groups playing the 'environmental' card and getting support from people that are unable to go out and find facts out for themselves.
Understand that once 4x4's are out of the picture then bikes will be next on the list. In fact they already are aren't they?
Still i'm sure that the ex 4x4 drivers in their now grey, environmentally friendly, unoffensive, LPG perfect sized family cars will give all the support we need when we appeal to retain our identity and our way of life.
Just remember that it's all for our own good .. the crash protectors/back supports/ airbags/ speed limits/ noise limits/ BHP limits/ABS/TC/EPS/ leg protectors ... don't worry .. they'll look after us, the nasty 4x4's will be banned, these unsafe, offensive bikes will be sanitized and we will all be happy.
Phew .. i'll get me coat .. :p
