View Full Version : Question from the clueless

A couple of times now when I've opened the throttle hard(ish), then at around 6-7000 rpm, the revs shoot up but the bike slows down for a split-second then sorts itself out.
Is the likely to be the clutch slipping ? or a fuelling problem ?
Bike is 2001 M600 approaching 20,000 miles, original clutch.

get the bike dyno'd, probably a flat spot and something in the carb needs tweaking. Could be the clutch but I dont see why it would choose to cut in consistently at that point. Dyno runs are good, you get a graph for your bike! it's like being in the future.
good luck.

One could suggest the battery, but I'm being charitable...

Therefore you are?

Perhaps because this is where the bike makes peak torque, and thus is forcing the clutch to slip?

It doesn't force it 'in' - the torque simply overwhelms the friction of the clutch plates, and hence, slips...

ps. Don't even get me started on drum'n'bass, or R'n'B for that matter - grrrrrrrrr...

I see, thanks for saying that the "torque simply overwhelms the friction"....nice!
yours always.

ps.I still think it's fuel though.

As long as you like rock...

You mean those twa tty 'Noo'metal' bands?, I totally agree...
I'm much more of an 80's rocker (erm, were you born then?) - Def Leppard, Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Gun's and Roses even (on a good day) and perhaps a bit of ver Maiden - just as long as there is a bit of comedy with it...

Nope.....
Sounds like clutch to me.
If the revs shoot up (thus the engine is spinning faster) but the drive doesn't increase, it means it isn't being transferred properly (or you're using an elastic band instead of a chain).

Actually I am using a rubber band for a chain, but that's another story....
That's what I was thinking Kevlar Kid.
I'm waiting for a new (non-elastic) chain and sprockets to arrive in the post, so as I'll need to get the tools out to change those, maybe I'll have a look at the clutch at the same time.

Mine is a M600, 23,000 miles, 2001 and mine did the exact same thing around 21,000 miles so PeteS4 put a new clutch in and then it was fine :)
Think that was the only decent thing he did on my bike

Ah interesting, thanks Chappers.
Mine's going a bit earlier so maybe I'm heavier on the clutch (I'm probably just heavier :) )
Thanks all, better start looking for some clutch plates.
