I was apparently doing an average of 115 mph up the M27 last night according to my companion but my speedo said 95, he was doing 120 mph to keep up. I have had people say this to me before. It seems the faster I go, the bigger the gap becomes - what I want to know is how do you calibrate a speedo and has anyone else encountered this, as far as I know the correct tyres are fitted!

i know the faster you go the greater the inaccuracy becomes as for calibration of the blighters im spent on the issue. ide say best bet would be to replace the speedo.

You can get your speedo calibrated scrumpster..good place to start in terms of finding places is the back of the classic bike mags. I will getting my 888 one done over the winter if your in no rudh so ill let you know how I get on.

Cheers!

What size front tyre is fitted?

You'll find that no speedo is 100% accurate (Zero Tolerance Speeding Policy would be a nightmare) due to the mechanisms variations. You'll find that any error will get worse the higher the speed in general. If you want it checked, you'll find instrument repair specialists in something like Classic Bike

I'm just impressed that an M600 can average 115mph...

... have you thought about entering Desmo Due next season Scrumpy?!

I think the law says your speedo must be accurate to within +/- 10%.
Mine reads 3.3% fast according to my GPS.
If your speedo reads 13% slow(only just out of legal calibration) and your mate's speedo reads 13% fast(ditto) at a genuine 110mph your speedos would be showing 95.7 and 124.3 respectively (down the back straight a Snetterton, naturally)

knowing your bikes 'history' i'd say anything is possible, some years ago a bright spark working as a temp for chris clarke did something to my speedo and fitted a kph part so everything i did read wrong, it took them ages to find out what was up as nothing was broken, i never spotted it as i had no way of knowing and the service man only spotted it when he did a test ride after service.
Just a thought.

Look on the bright side, think of the lack of miles you can put on the clock while you ride it ;)

I've just re-read your original post, with the correct numbers you're both within about 10% of 105mph.

Cheers Natty, much appreciated, and I'm in no rudh??. Slob suggests doing that speed every night until my colleagues clock me, then send myself a summons or not as the case may be :D

If I had the cash and assistance I'd love to do it, oh and another bike, becos I couldn't wreck mine, heaven forbid! But I think I'll stick to spectating for now ;)

Dave, knowing my bikes 'history', I wish I did know my bikes history!!! :)

How do you know your companions speedo was any more accurate than yours?

An average of 115 mph seems a little optimistic?

A cheapish check may be to wireup a pushbike speedo like those you can get from Halfords for about a fiver.

You will need to tape the magnet to a wheel - I expect the back one would be easier and then tape the sensor somewhere close on the frame. Then mark the bikes tyre and paddle forwards one revolution to measure the tyre's rolling circumference and calibrate the speedo.

A mate said he was going to do this on his FireBlade, but I never spoke to him about it to find out how sucessful it was. I'll be seeing him next week so i'll ask then.

Calm down Nonnie, I aint that quick, plus straight is fine, bends are quite another matter :D The guy that was following also has a m900 and he was quite surprised that my little 600 was going quite so quick...........I wish I knew it's history.
