Haven't been there since years & years, but still haven't forgotten the drive on the ridge that separates Ijsselmeer from the atlantic. They also seem to have built a road with similar scenery farther south.

The zoo has an impressive reptile house if I recall, It's a nice buzzy city full of chilled Europeans, good art galleries and the like unless you want to do the other tourist stuff and get stoned or look at the red light district?

I think Nik the beef has just returned from there?

I once went to Amsterdam in my late teens for a bank holiday weekend. It's all a bit of a haze really, but considering I didn't return for a couple of weeks, I guess I had a great time.
Would like to go back at some point with my sensible adult head on.
I'd say it's an experience everybody should do but to be honest I can't really remember! Go and tell me what it's like!

Thanks Dave, you say the nicest things :) Actually I'm not a regular visitor any more but if taking a Monnie I can recommend blasting through the Benelux Tunnel South of Rotterdam :D
Also a trip across the bridge at Arnhem is good but watch out for any snipers or Panzers that the boys might have missed 60 odd years ago ;)
I have been to Amsterdam a couple of times and there is lots to see and do there,it's a very busy city full of people from many countries and worth visiting just for the experience.
Well worth visiting some of the smaller towns and finding a nice bar that sells Palm or Dommelsch or even better some Belgian beers which are much cheaper over there.

http://www.holland.com/splash/ might be a good place to start.

I am sure some other people on here will give you some more tips, enjoy the country, the people there will look after you.

Watch out for the mountain goats and take precautions for altitude sickness. You'll need some 225lb breaking strain fishing line as well............................

No, you rum jockeys it's not hilly or famous for angling, just head to the nearest bar, tie one leg off (with said fishing line) and dodge the ruminants on the way up as you savour the flavour................. ;) :D :D :D :D

There's summat for everyone in Holland, if you're going to Amsterdam and you believe in the 'when in Rome' ethos I highly recommend the laughing buddha and the sweet-tooth from Barneys - http://www.barneys.biz (oh and they do a brilliant fry up too in the restaurant bit on the corner). A great way to start the day.

If ya like culture there's the the Van Gogh museum or the Reiksmuseum (sp?) which are worth the visit, a floating flower market which is pretty cool.

For the uncultured there are 2 museums of a more salubrious nature, plentyof 'interesting' shops (Absolute Dannys is one that springs to mind!) and just wandering the red light district is an eye opener!!

The missus and I avoided the culture bit though... ;)

You have to do a canal boat trip, I recommend the evening candlelight one run by lovers cruises or something it was like the Dutch Cheech and Chong running it. I believe they even do one that takes in the red light district from the water. Make sure you do the 2 hour one as it's much more laid back.

or http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/ for starters...

Find a cafe or two in Ansterjam, choose your selection of local cigarettes and spend a couple of hours there with a coffee, beer then take a cannal trip.
The buildings and archtecture looks a whole lot more sublime under the influence

Take a look here:
http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/DSW/EN/Travel/Transport/T-Newcastle-Amsterdam/faresfor2005.htm

Not sure if they sail from nearer your place or not. You can generally get a deal with cabin for about £45-50 they say its £20 for a bike but I am not sure if they will let you take a bike and give you a deal.
I went on one earlier last year, great journey over a few bevvies in the C :D asino on the boat a wander round Amsterdam and you must try the cafe's.....only if you take the bike dont forget where you left it!

You are in Norfolk mate so best you get down to Harwich http://www.stenaferry.co.uk/

The trip on the super seacat is about 3 and a half hours from Harwich to the Hook of Holland....after that Holland is your oyster ;)
