Hi can any one out there help me with a diagram of how to remove an S4 starter motor and also a schematic of how it comes apart please :)

I have a problem with the bike turning over very slowly or not at all :(

I have been down all the normal routes that people recommend such as :-

A) New battery
B) New side stand switch (twice  )Any onen want to buy a new one never used
C) Total bottom end rewire (due to side stand switch shorting)
D) Side stand switch totally removed

And i still have this starting problem

The only thing left now is to remove the starter motor and have a look at the brushes and springs unless i have missed something out ?

And another thing i just noticed the paint is coming off my lower casings

If i dont get this bike going now.Its going and i`ll get a full on Enduro Racer cos i`m having more fun racing one of them at the moment

Any help or thoughts most appreciated

Hi there

Just a thought

Try and spin the starter moter directly from the bikes batery
eg. run some heavy cable to the starter pole

if it spins it's not your problem

also whip the plugs out !

good luck,, rich

Cheers Rich :)

Tried that with three different bike batteries turns over very sluggish.Put a car jump pack on it and it turns much more freely

This is what make me think that the starter brushes or something in there is not right

Plus i have been doing searches on other Ducati sites and they seem to follow my line of thinking

I take it the bike runs fine and just won't start off the starter?

Its unusual for the starter to fail but if you have had a battery direct onto it then the next step is to take the starter motor off.

To remove the starter you basically need to:

drain the oil
drain the coolant
remove the LH engine case (you need a puller, easy to make)
remove the flywheel, you will need an impact gun or the factory locking tool
remove the starter intermediate pinions
remove the starter

a 916 Haynes manual is really a must to do this properly and also tells you how to strip the starter motor.

you may also need to check the starter clutch to make sure its not sticking and thus damaging the starter motor.

When ever I've had trouble with sluggish starter motors (usually on cars in cold weather) it either means the battery is duff, or a few times it's been down to a poor return earth.

You can normally spot a poor earth connection, because it gets really hot after a few attempts to turn the engine over. One of my cars was a real bitch to start one winter until I replaced the engines braided earth strap, and the earth lead to the chassis from the motor.

Loose or corroded battery terminals is another classic for causing starting problems, again due to the high resistance & overheating under load.

Could still be that the motor is knackered - but worth checking first?

This sounds exactally the same problem I had on my S4! Same symptems, and tried all the same remedys. Had friends who are auto electricians look at it, local bike shop had it for a week, none could find a real fault. In the end I started it with a car battery and went for a long ride, fine, started every time after that, all the charging in the world doesnt seem to do the same as the bike charging itself!
As far as taking the starter off if I remember correctly there are 3 allen bollts which hold it on, accesed by taking off the lh engine case, and I think (cant promise) you can get at the bolts by moving the pinion gear and the flywheel round so you can line up the bolts, but you will need a long allen key socket!
Get it checked out by a starter motor/altenator specialist, if its found to be faulty have them rebuild it! Ive just had my Toyota one done! Toyota price £400, rebuilt by local specialist £100 ie saving £300 to be spent on carbon goodies for new S4R :D
Im sure Ducati dealers will want a Kings ransom for one too!

Have a look at " starter problem! S4 " a post I put up in April on here that may help, cant remember how to do a link!

Good luck

Thanks for the assistance so far guys a great help

I love this site so friendly :D

After reading the advice i decided to have one last crack at sorting it out  but i think i have made it worse

A) battery left on bike to charge for 24 hrs reading 10.63v
b) changed for a fully charged one 13.64 v
C) thumbed starter she fires up
D) noticed tacho needle jumping to 3500 rpm never seen that before
E) switch off bike
F) restart bike fires up withh slight hesitation leave to idel 4 5 mins with occasional throttle blip switch off, only thing noticable was reguator felt warm to touch
G) goes to restart bike nothing not even a light on the dash
H) check battery 3.2 volts on bike
I) remove battery and check off bike 12.7 volts
j) there is now nothing at all no dash lights / no starter clicking / lights

Its like the main fuse has blown but all the fuses are ok !!!!!!!!

Now i am totaly stumped its driving me up the wall

Any one any more pointers before i call in the caverllry?

you have a short somewhere on the bike, with the battery connected you should get ~ 12 to 13 v without the engine running, with engine running a little higher up to ~ 14 v. Anything below 12v is a problem.

Nice try Scotty but I think that Dave wants a battery and not a starter motor ;)
