My monster seat has been recovered in alcantara, you cant see it too well in the pic as still has the rear cowl on. but have black seat top with red sides and white corse stripe on pillion part.

Looks okay but very similar to the DP ones froma few years back. If I was going to get a custom seat made (and I am) I would want something that you couldn't buy off the shelf. Some more ideas here:

£30 - £40 - seems like a good price. Who quoted that?

Alcantara - looks really stunning when new but be interested in how that wears? Who did yours?

Best regards all

Mr C,
I think the red & black seat combo on the S4 looks great. I often run my 900 without the seat cover, especially when taking sleeping bag, tent etc to rallies. Was considering getting a spare re-covered in a similar style, as the bog standard black seat looks a bit sad without the cover IMO.

Also like your red wheels with white pinstiping at the rim, really set of the rest of the S4 a treat - pity about the plumbing though :p ;)

Simon,

Alcantara is a synthetic suede material which is very hard wearing. I think the big drawback of using it on bike seats is that the surface is not very waterproof, so you get a soggy butt if left parked up or ridden in the rain. Also although it's claimed to be easy clean, I doubt you could keep lighter colours stain free on a bike for too long?

I've only had the bike a month now so it still looks brand new. No sign of any wear yet. But your right about the water. When I wash it it takes half an hour or so to dry out. I'm not sure who did the seat as it was on when i bought the bike altho I could find out.
Photo's with cowel off here (http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/jimboulby/album?.dir=/5e81&.src=ph&.tok=phPkoPDBH4tNP3aa)

Seems that maybe we could organise a club discount if enough interest? Couldn't find any prices either but am interested in costs and finishes aswell i.e. piping, embossed logos, two tone designs etc.

Still looking for someone to do it though.

Best regards

I actually wasn't sure what it was but I actually have it on my 996 seat.

It was like suede at first but now the 'pile' is flat and looks a bit grotty really. Mind you, I'm not the best at looking after stuff so don't know if a few years of rain and road grime would help it look its best. Saw one on a fireblade at Dave's the other day and it looked pretty good (almost new) and that was 2 years old.

Would definitely be interested in other materials just for comparison aswell - was looking at leather but surprisingly, it is not recommended on bikes due to the stretching and excessive exposure to the elements. Only recommended if you can feed it regularly - couldn't get my sh1t together to feed a dog, never mind a seat.

See you soon

Preston Car Trim 01772 251212 I'd used them before in the past for car seats and he's always done a really good job. the guy who owns it does bike seats as well. He can do pretty much any design you want.

Simon, Alan has alcantara on his tri-colour single seat.
has been out in most weathers since going on there in Jan last year, and still looking good as new.

As GT says, it gets a bit soggy when really soaked, but doesnt take too long to dry out to good condition again.

Plus point is, its not slippy even when wet - but minus point is, if riding in any 'non-leather' trousers, its a bother to slide across to hang off it!

Al got his done at a marine place in Chertsey, will find out more for you when he gets in from work if you like?

I've asked Granucci for a price on their two tone covers. That's not alcantra though, some sort of Carbon effect weave, even better for my monnie methinks. I'm also going to speak to my local chopper maker and see what he can turn up. Failing that, well there's alway the upholster at the end of the road - have you seen the way the existing cover is fitted? Hardly rocket science is it?

The more contacts, the merrier. I guess the tricky bit is the sewing in a straight line and how tight to mount the material without it ripping, going baggy etc. Nobody likes a baggy seat, especially a wet, baggy seat. I guess the embroidered logos may be a bit tricky aswell but I guess that is all automated now anyway?

Always up for 'normal' people doing the work rather than specialist motorcycle shops - almost always cheaper that way. Have you seen how much Casoli charge for their 'bespoke' seats!

Better get back onto Photoshop and start designing. Wehey, anything to stop me doing my proper job.

A lot of car manufactures use it to trim interiors (seats etc) so its hard wearing if not waterproof.
