What is this?

I've got a Haynes on order but not arrived yet. I've now done 550 miles and got the bike booked in for 600 mile service but because I don't trust dealers I will change the oil when I get home in case they economise and fill it with Tesco's finest(paranoid perhaps?). I can see the drain plug ,and the gauze strainer must be the one with the wire attached which I assume is the oil temp sensor, but what is the other plug for and does it need to be removed before unscrewing the gauze filter. I've downloaded the parts list but it just calls it a cap.
An easy one for the experts no doubt?
