Hi, can anybody tell me how to go about tensioning the chain on an S4R. I understand it works on a cam of some sort, but I can't find a manual for the S4R anywhere on the net.

I've never had a bike with a single sided swing arm before. Do I need any specialised tools to do the job?

The owners manual is really useful informing you to contact a dealer or service centre to get it tensioned.

hi black ferret,

A suspension spanner may fit if you have one failing that you will need to get a tool from your dealer, its hook shaped and locks on the cog on the hub next to the back wheel. On the hub you will see two 14mm nuts they both have to be loostened before adjustment can be made. I found that using a long 14 mm socket makes life easier to undo these.

There is no tight spot to look for on the chain as you would on a a bike with a standard swingarm but adjustment must be made with the bike on its side stand. I hope this helps guess its easier to do than explain

Good luck

The torque setting is 33NM for the two bolts. Apparently it can cause wheel beering failure if not torqued properly - hence they don't provide the adjustment tool in the tool kit

Hope it helps :burnout:

p.s. Birchie why is their no tight spot on a "single sider"? surely it's the chain that stretches......all of my other single sided bikes in the past have had tight spots

Surely any chain will get a tight spot?

As to doing it on the side stand.... i previously had a Triumph 955 with a single sided swing arm and i phoned the factory tech guys who gave me the measurements for doing the chain while the bike is on a rear stand. I am sure this info is going to be available through the dealers or Ducati direct.

Needless to say i have not got it yet or i would post it.

Ah s4r dude,

I must admit i thought that there should be a tight spot to look for when i did mine first off so i asked the good chaps at pro-v, apparently not the case.

The adjustment is also covered in the Haynes manual for a 748/996 etc.

Take it easy

I was quoted 28 NM by Italia Lincoln dealers! The 'C' or hook spanner needed is pretty big. I used the standard one in a mates' VFR toolkit and it worked OK

I have a spanner which the previous owner had made up speshally (sic)
