My insurance is due for renewal next week - no problems, I have a reasonable quote

However, I am also about to put some (presumably) non road legal exhausts on, and if I don't declare this, I'm aware that my insuance may be void :(

So I have to declare - and hope it doesn't screw me too much.

Any recommendations, suggestions or advice??

When I insured my Busa with full titanium system on, it made no difference.
But it will vary from insurer to insurer.

I have just had to take my DP cans off as the insurance company doesn't like them 'cos they're not road legal - so I'm back to the standard ones until August..... :(

I know a lot of people don't bother to notify there insurance companies of this kind of mod, but the potential consequences don't bear thinking about.

Just to be clear then ,is my insurance invaild because off my 'race use only termis'
I was led to belive if you had a claim they would only replace with standard cans if they were damaged?

You should be OK as long as you declare what is on there. But, it will vary from insurer to insurer.

Otherwise you can technically invalidate your insurance which isn't a good thing if you've hit a third party.

As has been said - it depends on the insurance company (I used to be a branch underwriter for Norwich Union and specialised in modifieds but have also worked for various insurance brokers in the past)

Technically, the insurance company is insuring the risk that was notified to them on the proposal form. Therefore if you didn't disclose your modifications, you are not riding the 'risk' that they are insuring. By rights, if you try and make a claim, they are entitled to hand you back your premium and declare that you have no cover as the 'risk' has changed.

Some companies, those that are more happy to accept modifications, may just state that all is ok and give you a minor bollocking for not notifing them, others may state that an additional premium would have been due and hit you for some more money before they deal with the claim.

Where a third party is involved, the 'Road Traffic Act' complicates things, as if you are in possession of a certificate of insurance, they will have to pay the third party damage / injury. However, under their rights of subrogation, they can then come after you for what they have paid out (imagine the cost if you kill someone).

If you are paying to insure your bike comp though, you may well not be paid anything for your own damage (not just the cans).

The reality is if you don't tell them, you wont know how they will react until it's too late.

Some of this may not be 100% spot on (it's been about 8 years since I've dealt with insurance) but its going to be 95% correct.

Obviously, the Police may also throw more at you on top of all this.

Just renewed today - using Royal and Sun Alliance through Carol Nash - no extra charge for the Termigoni's :) :)

Rumble, rumble.... :burnout:
