I may be wrong (more than likely) but I think without the master key, you cannot get another key cut as the immobiliser chips are contained within the key. Without the master key (red I think), the whole immobiliser and associated gubbins (tech speak) need to be replaced - at least £1500 sovs to you, sir.

Hope this helps but most probably not what you wanted to hear. But hey, what do I know, I'm just the security guard and now nothing of any practical use.

Best regards

You're right!

I recently thought i'd lost my keys to my bike, both the red master key and black keys. I checked with riders of bristol (my nearest ducati dealer). That's what they informed me. A very expensive piece of kit by all accounts.

What year did they start sending bikes out with these red keys then?

I don't have one...

Not sure what year but i think it has something to do with the ducati immobiliser. i.e, if the bike is fitted with a factory immobiliser then it should have the red master key.

My last monster was 1997 and it didnt have one (red key nor immobiliser)

My latest one is 2001 and it has.

if its a 600 then it's got carbs and no factory security there no red key needed.

only a new one will have no code (dp ecu) but then you will still need keys and barrels for ignition and tank i think dp ecu is about £800

As a thought - you might be able to find a pre-immobiliser ECU (and clocks and keys) from an earlier EFi bike (an M900 say), although that wouldn't be specifically for the 800 engine of course and I don't know if it could be set up to run properly? (and you'd probably have to chop the loom about a bit too)...

Why not have a word with one of the tuning specialists - Moto Rapido and Protwins (are two I know of) who seem to know their onions...

I presume you've exhausted every line of enquiry about finding the original keys?

In thiese days of laser surgery, hover boots, talking kettles and computers you would think that there would be some way of plugging a laptop into the thing and cracking the bugger? 1500 expletives expletives quid?! if ever a kings ransom was plucked from the ether then that has to be it! A key for a modern motor costs about 50 quid (still a bit rip offs ville) but this? Engine flaking is one thing but I feel a ukmoc petition coming on, suppose ones house was ransacked and the master nabbed? or just lost? gits.

Ah but it's to deter scrotes from nicking your bike you see... (although your average scrote won't realise he can't start it until he's got it in his shed, then he will probably torch it - the b'astard...), but it should stop the pro's I guess...

I have a second ECU, which the dealer stupidly coded to my keys when he didn't actually need to - Norwich Union loved him.

I can see the logic but if mr punter has ID, V5 and a gas bill (probly) then that should vouche for the lady/gentlemans lack of scoteness? The thieving buggers are always one step ahead computers wise (the other side pays more) and any organised crime chappy has a never ending supply of micky mouse credit cards to purchase the key with? alas it's mr upstanding that foots the bill. Again.

I would have thought the first question is ... where are the original keys, if you bought a bike with no keys how was it pdi ed and road tested, it all sounds iffy to me

Check out ProTwins site as I swear I saw them doing replacement ECU's for racing. These bypass the immobiliser and you also don't need a key to run....

This is off the top of my head so it could be wrong.

here it is

http://www.protwins.co.uk/Ultimap/ultimap_ecu.html

suppose the question is... is it road legal, and will it make it a scrote magnet??
