why not spend the money on a better shock, ohlins or the other fella that I can't remember? you can do anything...at a price.

Like Yerbs said, you would be better off upgrading what you already have, maybe with an ohlins or WP shock, and alloy swing arm if it hasn't alread got one. The two frames are completely different at the back end, the later hoopless set-up uses the ST4/S4 style frame, where as earlier bikes use a version of the 888 frame and it wouldn't be cheap to mod.

What benefits does the ally swingarm have over the steel item?

It's lighter than steel so less unsprung weight, giving the shock less work to do and in theory improves the handling. They also polish up a treat

Wouldn't the steel one be of thinner material, therefore making it about the same weight? I'm drawing on old mountain bike ally Vs. steel experience.

Steel one is quite thick and deffo heavier. And some go rusty with some of the ducati crap paint. :o

Just check on ebay. Make sure its a goodun and you have all the parts else you will end up like pd and have to pay out for right bits like adjusters and spindles.

I've just fitted one of their swing arms to a 98 600 and its beautifully made + I've coupled to an Ohlin shock. Fitted ok although had to modify exhaust pipes for clearance. cost about £400 if my memory serves me right

theory is: steel is thinner but for the same weight, ally can be larger section, therefore stiffer, thus improving the handling...which probably doesn't apply to pushbikes but does with dozens of BHP on tap. (Unless I'm mistaken, in which case one of the pro engineers here will doubtless correct me)

I have a bare 916 single sided swing arm which can go :) I do mean bare tho.

£75, you pay postage.
