I desparatly need a new tank (mine is seriously goosed) I have done the usual ebay thing and have followed up a couple, but still nothing certain. If anyone knows of or has one, please PM me. I will consider anything as long as there isnt rust inside the tank.

This really is making the difference to me coming to the weekender, as the monnie had to be pushed home today.......again!! Bitch!

Cheers Lin. I had a look last night and today but i didnt find anything. I always get beaten to it on ebay, and have, to a degree, given up with it. But i shall continue my search.

I have had to ring the ferry company this morning to talk about 'what if i had to cancel my ticket?'. Not good, and i feel pretty low today. If truth be told, i now think my chances of getting to the weekender are slowly getting worse. I shall let you know what happens Lin. I will be sending the dosh for Arrow Mill, but if i have to cancel, will i lose the money?

are you refering to wall building/destruction activity that has been keeping me confined to the bathroom for the last three weeks ?
the fun is over, all the walls have been destroyed and rebuild. only a few finishing touches left.. no power tools, no fun. it's looking good, thanks !

don't worry sugar, the worst youll get is a 24 hour ban and some nagging pms which can be tucked away in "delete" without having to read them! hoorah! yellow motorbikes=crap, yellow alcohol=good, yellow snow=inedible.

Hi Yerbs..Yeah i got it going but it conked out again resulting in a push home. I think the tank is so rusty inside that its just knackered the petrol and clogged the carbs .... again. I did put a new fuel filter on as well. I am a little worried about the suggestion of things like Petseal ( i dont think i can even get it here) as i think the only thing to go in your tank (other than water) is petrol. Does this stuff break down and cause the same problems in time?

Have you done the swill round with nuts + washers on a loop of string to break the rust off the inside of the tank?

Petseal is designed to go into petrol tanks, I've used it on a couple without problems.

This stuff has been recommended to me, I've not had personal experience of it but for £15 could well be worth a try

As Crust said a good clean and flush of the tank should get you running for a while, but a coating would help prevent further rust build up. If the tank filter's been neglected or become damaged, theres a good chance the rust will be everywhere and the whole fuel system (carbs, pump, tap and pipes) may need a good clean out.

The other thing to bear in mind is that older tanks often split and leak at the hinge point if they have rusted badly, so a repair or coating may not be cost effective in the long term.

I spoke to a chap at the Stafford classic show selling a resin based sealant, but I'm buggered if I can remember the name of it now. This stuff sold by Frost looks similar though?

M&P flog Petseal too...

i had tank problems this winter, but i got on top of them:
i had a leaking hinge mounthing plate, which i got soldered, but to clean clean the tank of petrol (before soldering it), i had it filled with water. it was them covered in rust (and twisted, from the weld), i manage to get it straight, and cleaned the inside with Hammerite rust remover. it's a mild acid, i left it in the tank 48h, to the rim.
drained it, rinsed it a couple of times with petrol, changed the filter, and it's now spotless. cost me around £10 worth of chemical.

"I think the tank is so rusty inside that its just knackered the petrol and clogged the carbs .... again. I did put a new fuel filter on as well."

Well mine is rusty as billy jenkins * around the top but it works fine, (ish) If the fuel filter is clear but it has stopped running that would not suggest rust to me? I'm just worried that you are going thru a process of elimination...vacuum pump? -gasket! possibly rust? -replace the tank! all a bit vague and costly? I mean, your carbs could be gunged up too?.....I would get to a mechanic and get it sorted properly because this whole bag o !*!*!*!*e "is it this?" has gone on for far too long now. Obviously we'll offer tips but after a point a qualified "man who knows" is the best option.
Alex.

ps. (IMO) but you knew that anyway.....
pps you're not the only one, I have 2 leaky forks, a dead battery and a clutch drag that can no longer be avoided......and not much money!

* "billy jenkins"-latin for "very rusty indeed"
