Make sure the bike is on a stand of sorts!!! Hey its bound to have happened!
You should then be able to knock the splindle out with a drift of some sorts as long as the pinch bolts are loose (4 of them?)

when you say the spindle just spins.... you do know it spins out like a bolt would, one end has a thread on it

I hang my head in shame, of course it has a thread on it!
I trust that you have not spent the last hour belting the spindle with a big 'ammer.
Ooops Sorry.

Thanx guys, the problem is when I undo all four pinch bolts the axle will turn but so does what looks like a collar that it goes into(nearside). When I tighten up the nearside pinch bolts I cant get it to turn  Could be cos I'm using a "baggy" allen key, I'll go and buy one the correct size and try more force

ok, found this on ebay...... this is the shape of your spindel that runs through your front wheel.... the fat end, shown in pic on the right will be on the right hand side of wheel if you were sat on bike, ie the front brake lever side on the bars......... you need something like a sump plug for a car engine if you dont have right part, i use 1 i got from halfords.... stick it in the hole, put a socket or spanner on the other end and wind it out http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10448&item=7959576760&rd=1

Does your bike have the original narrow spindle or the later hollow spindle?
If it's the narrow spindle you need to keep the pinch bolts done up to stop the collar turning - I would suspect the spindle is seized in the collar so you may have to lean on it to get it undone. It's worth investing in a proper hex socket so you can get some leverage with a breaker bar on rather than using an allen key. Halfords sell them for about £3-4 I think.
If you get stuck, let me know and I'll post a pic or two.

It's the narrow spindle.I've been and bought the correct hex socket, tightened the pinch bolts on yhe nearside and it still wont budge  I've just soaked it in WD40, I'll have another go soon.

Done it!! :) by really tightening the pinch bolts and attaching a 4 foot pole to the wrench  ,now I've just gotta figure out how to knock out the bulges in the wheel

Get the rim repaired professionally - not worth the risk.
