Correct, both of you.
Only Two were built. The second one crashed after being accidently hit by an escort fighter. The first one is preserved somewhere I believe.

Didge,
three power blocks built supersonic bombing aircraft in the late 60's. The Americans and the Russians effectively canned theirs due to (1) costs and (2) technical problems, mostly with materials (composites are now much better). We (and the French) took a leaf from the Nazis book and disguised it as a civil airliner, just the way they did with the Dornier "flying pencil" which they called a 'fast mail aircraft'.

I don`t profess to know much about this stuff, certainly not as much as you guys obviously do, but I can recommend a really interesting book I read a while back ; Skunk Works. You may have read it, buy if you haven`t, it's worth getting hold of a copy because it gives a fascinating insight into Lockheeds experimental facility in San Diego and reveals many interesting facts and anecdotes about the Blackbird and the U2 etc etc.

Well as far as I know (and according to ye olde rumour mill) most of the 'black' planes flown out of Groom Lake (home of the Skunk Works, also known as "The Ranch," "Area 51," and "Dreamland") normally sport a little skunk on the tail section too

Not sure if this applies to operational squadrons outside of Groom Lake or whether it's only on the prototypes
