Hi everyone, have treated myself, via ebay, to a instrument set, I have no tacho and have wanted a standard pod for a while, however, when they arrived today I was gutted to find that despite the description of "as new" they are far from it !! the perspex on the front is sctatched, and at around the 7000 mark there is some damage / staining to the actual face of the tacho, not bothered about the speedo as I intend to fit my own, can I strip this thing right down and replace the perspex and clean the face ?? he has offered me a £50 reduction but I doupt he`ll take them back, what do you reckon ?

I dont tink they sell the parts seperate, there have been some faces/dials on t'market..stu had some with flags on them, you may be able to clean yrs tho. I doubt you will get the spare perspex tops from duc, however the top does come off with care, you could get a peice of perspex cut and have some diy fun? should be cheap and possible.
AY.
ps please note folks how I held back on the sarcy nonsense there...

Perspex will polish but you have to be so careful. The abrasive grains in solvol can dull it. I remember watching a work colleague years ago cleaning perspex with Brasso liquid.

If the lenses are swappable, what about using the one from the spare speedo?

I was just going to say what Slob did - I understand you can remove the bezels, as the poished surrounds that Rizoma do fit between the bezel and the lens/speedo housing, but it is a bit of a faff...

Personally I've found a Datatoiol Revlight makes a fairly useful tacho replacement, £40 well spent, fits the monster dash well too.

Kev;

The gauges can be taken apart but it is a slow and tedious project. I have pulled apart the early generation Ducati gauges but not this newer style. The old ones used a glass lense, not perspex. Is the actual damage to the perspex on the inside or outside? If you decide to take it apart and need tips let me know.

Zimbo, is it a faff to calibrate? I was thinking of one of these myself - is this Hijacking?

Easy to fit, senses off the ignition control unit input from the crankshaft sensor, just behind the battery.

To calibrate it you should idealy run the bike at 4000 rpm as part of the cal procedure so it can map the input pulse rate, but of course the monster has no tacho ... I've a frequency counter on my multimeter so could run the bike up till the input pulse rate reached 2 kHz. I also tried out of interest to set it up just guessing the 4000 rpm and to be honest it seemed pretty good!!! Gives a simple indication of RPM and shift light etc, doing a couple of trackdays this year on the monster so I thought it'd come in handy :p

The geezer has taken the clocks back and given me a full refund, so my next thought is maybe buy a new binacle & rev counter and fit my speedo, should work ??
